A Long-Awaited Family Getaway to Pondicherry

Now, if you have been planning your ultimate trip during this lockdown, we have to tell you, you are not alone! With all the spare time on our hands, we have taken the liberty of imagining a guest's account of their stay here at The Residency Towers Puducherry.

Blissful Beginnings

Friday, 4 September 2020

I can't believe it's finally happened! After months of being cooped up at home, I couldn’t wait to take my wife and son on a well-deserved vacation. After careful consideration, we decided that Pondicherry would be the safest destination as no air or train travel was required, and we could get there in the safety of our own car. I swiftly booked a room at The Residency Towers Puducherry for the long weekend. After the scenic drive on ECR where we counted down the hours, we were finally in the lobby and there was a palpable excitement in the air! While I was apprehensive about our first post pandemic trip, the ResiSafe docket that Uma at the Front Desk shared, and the cheerful and efficient staff assuaged my fears the moment we stepped in.

The check-in process was quick and contactless, and after dropping off our luggage, we looked for the best restaurants to visit nearby for a late lunch.

Post our first heavenly meal on the trip, we decided to walk off some calories on Promenade Beach. We continued to explore the area around the hotel, took some pictures, and managed to work up an appetite by dinner time.

Rohan’s favourite part about staying in a hotel is ordering room service, and the DigiValet provided in the room for online ordering added an extra element of excitement. When the food arrived, he lifted each cloche with the biggest smile on his face before digging in. After putting a full and drowsy Rohan to bed, Ankita and I headed to Bike & Barrel to get the holiday vibes going with some good music and the highly recommended Secret Cocktails. We ended a very promising first day with a plush bed for our tired, post-drive bodies to sink into.

Out on the Town

Carefully curated by our Holiday Concierge

After the deepest sleep I've had in ages, I knew I had to get some sightseeing in the next day, but not before a leisurely cup of morning coffee. With the Nespresso machine in our room, a fresh brew was available at our every beck and call. That morning, we had a video call with our proactive Leisure Host Shabamon, who tailored our day of exploring to our interests. Just as we were dashing out the door to see Pondy, Bijesh at the Front Desk reminded us that no trip is complete without Pavilion's lavish breakfast buffet, and boy were we glad that he caught us at the door! The spread was truly global to our utter delight, and a scrumptious heaven for my inner foodie. Satiated, we finally picked up cycles from the hotel, and made our way to the sights our Leisure Host recommended.

We began the day at Heritage Town and marvelled at the brightly painted houses and eclectic shopping scene, and every photo I took there made me feel like a pro. It seemed like the best time to visit Auroville next, and it looked like everyone else had the same idea! After a potent dose of excitement, we walked to Sri Aurobindo Ashram, for a moment of zen before continuing on our cycling expedition across Pondicherry. As an accomplished home gardener, my wife insisted we see the Botanical Garden on Shabamon’s recommendation. With every rare flower we saw, my wife could not contain her squeals of delight!

At the end of a day filled with cycling, walking, and more cycling, it was time for our pottery class that Shabamon had booked to give Rohan a break from sightseeing. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at ceramics, and Pondy’s calm pace offered me just that chance.

We headed back to the room and watched the night sky turn from orange to pink to deep blue, and used the Digivalet to order flaky, buttery croissants from Krave, and enjoyed more steaming cups of coffee. We spent the rest of the evening scouring Netflix for something to watch and eventually drifted off to sleep.

Au Revoir Pondicherry!

Sunday, 6 September 2020

The last day of a vacation is always bittersweet, and we wished we could stay forever. We spent some time at the hotel’s Library Atrium that morning, in awe of how we could still enjoy conversation with other travellers with seating designed for social distancing. One of our favourite things about this trip was Krave’s pastries, so we asked for the largest box of assorted pastries for friends back home to enjoy. Pardon the pun, but the pretty packaging was the icing on the cake! We enjoyed one last elaborate breakfast before our contactless check-out, and the thoughtful staff sanitised our luggage before we left, just as they had when we checked-in. As we drove away, I watched the hotel grow smaller in my rearview mirror and made sure to take a mental snapshot to remember one of the best weekends of our lives, with a little bit of luxury and a whole lot of heart.

While traveling might seem unthinkable right now, rest assured that we are working round the clock to ensure that your stay with us is safe, enjoyable, and memorable.
