The Great Puducherry Outdoors
Do you feel like you’ve explored Pondy’s White Town and the Tamil Quarter well enough? What if we tell you that’s not the end of it? Puducherry truly offers something for everyone. To fully experience the city’s history and culture, we must look beyond the well-travelled road.
Here’s a short list of places and activities that are bound to make your vacation memorable.
1. Be a patron at the Pondy Art & Craft Village
Art and craftsmanship form a significant part of any well-established culture. Just 15 minutes away from our hotel, is the Pondicherry Art & Craft Village – a platform built to sustain and promote indigenous, traditional, and contemporary skill sets. Here, you can find a wide variety of art displayed, including terracotta pottery, carved wood, textiles, glass painting, etc. You can even buy quality souvenirs for your friends and family while helping promote local art.
2. Surfing at Serenity Beach
Unlike the promenade’s rocky shores and Auroville beach’s calm waters, the large waves at Serenity beach make it the perfect spot for surfing. The beach is also home to a surf school for beginners, hobbyists, and enthusiasts alike. So grab your surfboards and ride the waves till sundown!
3. Scuba Diving
Pondy is home to many diving schools that allow you to explore the deep waters of the Bay of Bengal. On the day of the dive, pack a light lunch and refrain from scheduling anything else, for this activity is sure to tire you out completely. On the plus side, you'll discover a new perspective on life!
4. The Chunnambar Boat House
Less than 15 km away from the city and located near the Chunnambar Creek is a pristine forest-like park that’s the perfect spot for evening picnics. Aside from being the sole ferry to Paradise Beach, the boathouse also offers other leisure services such as paddleboat rides across the lake.
This Instagram-worthy seashore is also the best spot to try your hand at fishing. You don’t need your own gear, as fishing rods and nets are available for rent.
5. Ousteri Wildlife Sanctuary
We recommend that bird-watchers and wildlife enthusiasts definitely pay a visit to the Ousteri Wildlife Sanctuary, where over 160 species of birds, both aquatic and terrestrial, have been observed, including the Darter, the Black-headed Ibis, the Spot-billed Pelican, the Eurasian Spoonbill and the Painted Stork. The Sanctuary is also home to over 60 species of butterflies, as well as various species of frogs, turtles, lizards, snakes and mammals. It is truly a slice of paradise!
6. Bahour Lake
Tracing its roots back to the Chola dynasty, the Bahour Lake is one of the oldest irrigation lakes near Puducherry. It is also the second-largest seasonal freshwater wetlands and is considered an 'Important Bird Area' in the Union Territory. Since the lake is merely an hour's drive from town, pack a light picnic and enjoy the scenic stroll around the lake.
7. Rock climbing in the ravines near Auroville
Old and dried-out rivers near Auroville have left behind beautiful ravines that look like a scene straight out of a post-apocalyptic movie. Rock climbing schools in the city help you have a safe and adventurous experience that’s hard to come by in other parts of the region.
