Keep Calm and Coimba-tour
Do you often find yourself in Coimbatore for a work trip? Once the meetings are done and the contracts are signed, here is a list of things to do in our very own ‘Manchester of South India.’
Like any other city, Coimbatore is filled with malls housing some of the biggest brands, so you will feel right at home. But if you are looking at something exclusive to the Kovai, head to Cross Cut Road - the city’s shopping hub. The famous Coimbatore cotton sarees and shirts will feature in most clothing stores in addition to a dizzy array of delicate Banarasi silk, Khadi, or rich Kanchivaram sarees. Accessorize your latest purchases with a decadent collection of jewellery, from pure gold to a more rustic temple finish.
The great outdoors
If you want a change of pace, there are several hill stations like Yercaud, Ooty, Conoor or Munnar that are just a stone throw away from Kovai. Not only is this a welcome relief from the sweltering heat, but you may also get to see a little wildlife if you are lucky! For a self-imposed digital detox, give Kothagiri a shot. It is a slice of serenity away from the humdrum of city life, and from the reach of cell phone reception. Start your day with a bath in a babbling brook, a home cooked breakfast, and soak in the tranquil environment.
There are also several hiking trails if you would like to explore the great outdoors. Some of the more famous ones include Dhoni Hills, Perumal Peak, Vellari Mala, and Thalaiyar Falls trek. Between the Trichy and Sungam bypass road is the famous Valankulam lake, and if you are there in the evening, make sure you don’t miss the stunning sunset!
For the love of automobiles
The good people of Kovai are known for their love of automobiles. Car and bike aficionados come from all over the country to get their cars modified in Coimbatore. It is no secret that this city is home to one of the largest private antique car museums in the world. Located on Avinashi Road, is Gedee Car Museum with some of the finest of German, British, French, Indian, Japanese, American, and Spanish antique automobiles on display.
Apex Racing Academy is one of the country’s first two-wheeler racing academies to be open year round. Whether you are a novice or an expert, there are instructors to help hone your riding skills and let loose on the track! The Coimbatore Auto Sports Club conducts different racing events around the year. Be sure to check out their website before visiting, to witness some fast-paced action on the tracks.
For spiritual and physical well-being, the Isha Yoga center has meditation and yoga for those that wish to attend. The center, located at the foothills of Velliangiri, boasts of the ‘Largest Bust Sculpture’ in the world as certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. Tourists come from all over the country to visit this towering statue of Shiva to meditate around it. At 112 feet, the statue symbolizes the 112 ways in which to attain moksha (eternal salvation).
