Getting Married In The Modern Era - A Journey - A checklist of things to keep in mind

The Great Indian Wedding  - it’s not just an event, it is almost a festival in itself, to be remembered in nostalgia for generations to come. Every conversation piece in families starts off with a “Remember that time when this cousin of yours was getting married?

A wedding is an event of a lifetime, sure to be giving you butterflies in the stomach and leading that glowing smile that adorns your features, when you think of your special someone. Whether you’re going to be getting married in the next six months or even a year, it is never too early to start planning. Gone are the days of communal, traditional weddings, that were often in the wee hours of the morning. Nowadays, it doesn’t matter whether you’re from the North or South India, no wedding is complete without a Sangeet, and of course who can forget the Mehendi?

Before you start planning anything, remember to discuss everything with your partner first, come to a consensus and then the families involved.

Make a list of what both you and your partner want as well as the parents as well, and then start narrowing it down to what you would want to omit.

The three main things you have to keep at the back of your mind are the budget, the location and the number of guests you are expecting. Once you have this in place, everything else would be easier to get done with. Remember to not get panicky about things beyond your control, and most importantly, have fun planning.

 A) Budget:  This one topic is the most dreaded of all I would think, given its delicacy. Have a discussion with both families involved, discussing who would be paying for each function and remember to keep the tone jovial and light when discussing these.

 B) Events: Are you someone who loves the whole Big Fat Indian Wedding Theme? If so - what all functions would you be participating in? Here’s a list of the pre-events that you might want to keep in mind

  1. Nalungu (Haldi) - Usually done on the day before a wedding day, this is a fun ritual where the bride and the groom are smeared in Haldi paste before the ceremonial bath.
  2. Baraat - This is the ritual possession accompanying the groom to the venue. A lot of dancing involved, and super fun too.
  3. Sangeet - Usually combined with the Mehndi, this is when the youngsters can have fun and can be quite the stress-buster in the midst of the emotions running amok.
  4. Satyanarayana Vratam/ Homam - Usually done after the day of the wedding, this is when the newly-weds pray for their happy future together

 C) Number Of Guests:

Although we’d like to invite everyone in the world, remember to keep the list to the people who actually matter to you and know, instead of increasing the guest list every other day, make sure you put a deadline and stick to it. These days, it has become quite the trend to have your wedding in a star hotel as opposed to in a traditional temple - the reason being, it is far more convenient to host all the parties at one venue, including the bachelor and the bachelorette parties which can be had in the hotel bar itself!

Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t really cost much higher, if you book well in advance and stick to a budget. The best time that you can approach a five-star hotel is about six to eight months before the actual D-date, because wedding bookings usually start around four-five months ahead.
